X3

Posted in geekdom, movies, superheroes by sh4wn on the May 31, 2006

OK, i finally got to see X3: The Last Stand last night. The geek that resides in me (he has a partially furnished apartment, somewhere near my petuitary gland) really enjoyed this movie. i will start with a few negative comments, without spoiling anything for those who haven’t seen it.

First of all, i didn’t enjoy it as much as the first 2 X-Men films. i will say that i think part of that has to do with the fact that Brian Singer didn’t direct this one, in favor of directing the new Superman movie. The overall feel seems to have dropped by just a smidgeon. Not much, mind you, but a bit. There were some small things that bugged me, but that will be the end of my negativity.

The more i ponder the movie, the more i like it. Something that i really enjoyed was the use of powers throughout the film. People were using powers for everything, and you got to see a wide variety of powers throughout the story. Jean Grey was unbelievable. They showed part of her potential, and it was very impressive. I will dare say that this film is probably in my top 5 superhero films, but keep in mind that i love the X-Men, so i’m a touch biased.

Quick top 5:

X-Men
X2
Spiderman 2
Batman Begins
X3

i really liked Spiderman as well, but i think i liked this movie just a little more, mainly because i didn’t care for the green goblin.

i have to say that i went into X3 with low expectations, so i maybe enjoyed it more than i would have had my expectations been gigantic.

8.5 out of 10.

stupid sun

Posted in words by sh4wn on the May 30, 2006

i heard that the sun
is hot
hot like fire
hot like the summer
hot like the inside of a very large ant
the sun hates me
he taunts and burns me
he is a jerk
he is a dirty dirty ball
of molten lava
if i could fight him
i would
if i could tell him to leave me alone
and actually think that he would listen
i would
instead
the summer will defeat me
and cover me in moisture
and make me sad
over and over again
the sun
is trying to cook me
in hopes that he can eat me
i will be a delicious steak
for him to consume
or he will send a cousin
to partake in my medium well flesh

you will not defeat me
you will not taste my bones
stupid sun
stupid heat
i will put you out
one day

Questionable Content

Posted in art/design, the internets by sh4wn on the May 27, 2006

i'm completely addicted to Questionable Content.  It's a webcomic that has it's roots in indie culture.  It is many times, er, questionable in subject matter, but it is very funny.  The beautiful thing at this point, is that there are well over 600 comics, and i'm starting at the beginning, so i'm only half way through.  I've read several other webcomics before, and got bored after a few weeks, but this one has promise.  Mega Tokyo was one that i followed for a while, and Apple Geeks is great, too.  There are many other that you can find as you read through the Questionable Content site.  The writer/drawer, Jeph Jacques, sometimes has guest drawers fill in for him, and you can see their styles and follow their comics as well.

One thing that i've really enjoyed is watching Jeph's drawing style get better as the comic progresses.  i try to not get too caught up in the story to appreciate the drawing style.  He uses a Wacom tablet to draw all of the comics, which is very cool.  i'm most jealous of his skills, wishing that was a talent of mine.  Maybe i'll send him an email and see if he can mention lowercase collective in his comic.  Heh.

New Superman Trailer

Posted in movies, superheroes by sh4wn on the May 24, 2006

Yes. This is the best one yet.

In other news, bears didn’t attack my house, nor did they attack my neighbor’s house, as far as i know, but i wish i could have seen it if it did happen, except that i do like my neighbors, and i would not like to see their house get damaged, or for them to get eaten.

That’s all.

Lazy Tuesday.

i'm working on some mixes for posting, and i've been playing much of the X-Men video game, trying to beat it before the movie comes out this friday. i've also been hunting for some SNL video links to put on here, but i'm having a difficult time finding reliable links. You should check out Taco Town, Natalie Portman Gangsta Rap, and Lazy Sunday. If you're part of Myspace, do a search in their video section. you should find them.

Here's an interesting X-Men article. It's more comic related, rather than movie related, but you may enjoy it anyway if you're a fan.

i'm playing an online game these days called Travian. i'm on server 5, for those who like those sort of things. It's a strategy game that you can play for like 10 min a day or so. Mindless, yet, fun.

oatmeal

Posted in words by sh4wn on the May 19, 2006

oatmeal

her seasoned oatmeal was placed in front of my
drooling face. the secret recipe was only known by
her mother and an oriental cook who lived in upper
lower Algeria.  the aroma was almost visible
as it attacked my sensory glands located near
my eyes, which watered into the oatmeal.

i ate her oatmeal with the president of the
national association of pregnant mothers in search
of a better world for their children's
children's children can bark and grow small
Madagascarian plants for betrothed grandmothers.

the oatmeal was no lumpy, yet gummy.  not
chewy, yet runny.  it could not talk, yet
communicated to me like a tree to a bug.
it scratched my back as i dreamed of
wedding bells, even though there are none in
my church.  her oatmeal was my friend.

when i finally started to eat the wonderfully
seasoned oatmeal, it ran out of my mouth,
oozing out of the corners of my mouth,
dripping off my chin and onto my lap.
she handed me a napkin and i wiped my face.

but i could not help but notice the funny color
of the creamy, rich breakfast treat.  i have
never seen a food with such a clear, blue
appearance and silky, smooth consistency.
i thanked her and put on my cap and i
gave her a great big kiss and left, satisfied.

DrJones: we need to take over the offices above us
DrJones: have a firepole
Cherry: I like that
DrJones: so we can come down when the alarm sounds
DrJones: or, when Gus Sanchez arrives
sh4wn: i love Gus
DrJones: Gus has children… they are named 'Joy' and 'Rest'
DrJones: Joy and Rest Sanchez, of course
sh4wn: i didn't know that
DrJones: also a dog
sh4wn: is he married?
DrJones: Ted
sh4wn: that's his wife's name?
DrJones: no
DrJones: his dog
DrJones: his wife is Teresa
sh4wn: i tried to date Teresa once
sh4wn: i wonder if it's the same woman
DrJones: hrmm
DrJones: doubt it
sh4wn: i had a huge crush on her my junior year of college
sh4wn: Gus may have stolen her away
DrJones: Teresa arrives in the morning, to let you know that you don't have to even go in to work at all
sh4wn: she never visits me
sh4wn: i hate her
DrJones: that's probably why it didn't work between you two
sh4wn: she must spend all of her time in M'boro
sh4wn: the lousy whore
DrJones: she doesn't really visit me
DrJones: cause one time she did
DrJones: and i tried to capture her for frequent use
DrJones: Mrs. Sanchez is surprisingly nimble
sh4wn: of course she is
sh4wn: Gus wants more children
sh4wn: she's tired of giving it up
sh4wn: she visted you on monday and tuesday
DrJones: not monday… as i worked from home… had she visited, I would have done nothing
DrJones: same really on Tuesday… i worked until mid-day trip to airport
DrJones: it could be said that on the drive to the airport, after getting off the phone with clients, Gus visited in my car
sh4wn: it could be indeed
DrJones: Teresa came to stay with me for awhile when Illustrious was born
sh4wn: yeah
sh4wn: is she a midwife?
DrJones: no
DrJones: freeloader mostly
sh4wn: i had no idea
DrJones: but you tend to put up with her when you don't have to go to work
Cherry: edwardo theyoungest one is not much better
sh4wn: is not much better than what?
sh4wn: Ted?
sh4wn: Ted's a dog
DrJones: you're just making that up
Cherry: oh sorry
DrJones: although, it may be true
DrJones: it is a little known fact that there is a third Sanchez child…
DrJones: the oldest…
DrJones: but he is currently banished to the Congo with a bad case of genital herpes
DrJones: His name is Fiasco Sanchez
Cherry: I hear he has a gamy leg and a pentiant for wrapping his leg in tortillas
DrJones: that's the one
sh4wn: oh yeah…i saw that guy at Harris Teeter last week, i think
DrJones: in the Congo?
sh4wn: i don't remember being in the Congo…
sh4wn: odd
DrJones: cause there is another guy around here that wraps his leg in tortillas
DrJones: but he's a hack
DrJones: everybody knows it
sh4wn: that's the guy i saw
sh4wn: he kept trying to get the customers to sample his leg
sh4wn: it was truely disturbing
DrJones: yeah, that's not good
Cherry: I had a bite "Not Bad"
DrJones: i'll take your word for it cherry
sh4wn: yeah
sh4wn: i won't be sampling
sh4wn: you know how many people have been on that leg?
Cherry: I never thought of that
sh4wn: yeah
sh4wn: disgusting, really

X-Men: The Offical Game

Posted in gaming by sh4wn on the May 18, 2006

Yesterday i received a game that i preordered – X-Men: The Offical Game for the xbox 360.  I will quote a review i read, because they said it best:

And yes, the game is gorgeous on the 360. Watching Bobby Drake weave his ice slide about, while used portions tumble away in blocks, or seeing Nightcrawler teleport in a puff of black smoke from one location to another are all moments in which the game truly sparkles. And then, just for the sheer joy of it, there is the raging beast that slices and dices through enemies – Wolverine.

and here's the part that i love most about the game:

The combat styles for each character are markedly different. Wolverine is about slash, tumble, impale, slash some more and finally, slash some more. Iceman has defensive shields and that ice slide that can occupy a large part of the screen with the pathing, but is really a joy to watch and control. He can also send out a variety of ranged attacks, from a single volley to a locked-on storm. Nightcrawler, though, is perhaps the most diverse, and most entertaining of the trio. His acrobatic moves are much fun, but it is his teleportation that makes him a real joy to play. He can pop down from a high structure to a position behind an enemy, unleash an attack and then teleport away. Go back to the first movie, and his attacks inside the White House and you will understand exactly what is being described.

i was not expecting this game to be good, i must admit.  i purchased it because i love superhero games, and i love Nightcrawler, but i was very disappointed with the other X-Men games they've released in the past.  This game exceeded my expectations, and i've only played for a few hours.  Playing Nightcrawler is so much fun.  i'm a geek.

Left and right and maybe left again.

Posted in lowercase collective, personal by sh4wn on the May 16, 2006

i'm still working on the actress list, which is slow going. i'm also going to be posting a new mix soon.  lowercase collective is in the process of booking new shows, so if any of you want to do shows with us, let me know.  It would help if you were in a band, btw.  i know some of you think that dressing like a character from Star Trek and acting out scenes from various episodes or from the musical Annie constitutes as "a show", but it doesn't work in this case.

i wish i had more to say, but i don't.  Not today.
