Roller Derby
i had the privilege to experience Nashville’s newest craze last night: Roller Derby. it was the inaugural game, and Nashvillians showed up in full force. two teams, Damsels of Distress and Assault Rivals were met with a sold out crowd of eclectic mixture. freaks, moms, rockers, punks, sport fans, roller derby enthusiasts, kids, and a handful of normal people filled seats, bleachers and ground space to watch the teams of women throw each other around to score points.
the evening opened with a performance by Side Show Benny, who was unbelivably creepy and highly entertaining. he hammered a spike into his face. he put a screwdriver in his nose. he ate fire. he put a 24 inch glowstick down his throat, into his stomach, and activated it by taking a bow, pulling out a glowing rod. he had 4 irons (that you would iron clothes with) and hung them from his ears, tongue, and nipples. disturbing yet fascinating. that was followed by four tribal belly dancers, who i commented were like Marylin Manson meets a fancy greek restaurant. they did a good job.
Autovaughn played during the 2 intermissions, and their first set was much stronger than their second. they only played one song in their second set, and played it for almost 15 minutes. Autovaughn, listen to me, you’re not a jam band. you write good pop songs, and you play them well. please stick to those, and stop with the 15 minute version of a song where the guitar melody matches the melody of one of your stronger songs. and always play “Stay Another Night”. i saw some children cry when you didn’t play that one.
everyone go to the the Roller Derby when you can. buy tickets in advance.
happy groundhog’s day
to you and yours
happy groundhog’s day
may the snow fill your crevices
and fill you with joy
as the groundhog
and his day
smile warmly at you
