Ann Coulter: Spokesperson for Christianity?
First of all, it’s easy to dismiss Ann Coulter as a shock jock, a person who says things just for reaction. I’ve often wondered if she even believes what she is saying. But recently, she was on Donny Deutsch’s CNBC show, “The Big Idea,” which i’ve never seen because i don’t have cable, but my wife watches the Today show, and they were doing a recap of an incident that i happened to catch while wandering into the bedroom at the time they were showing said clip.
If you are unfamiliar with the incident, your best bet would be to read this transcript of the show.
As i was watching this, i was torn. On one hand, Ann Coulter was attempting to explain basic Christian doctrine, but was not doing a bang up job of it. Her choice of words was appalling. And she kept making it worse. But to her credit, i don’t think she was necessarily trying to be offensive, she was merely trying to explain her beliefs. On the other hand, she did such a poor job of it that she ended up making herself look like a condescending, no class bigot. Seems that’s something that she’s good at, at least from the few interviews and clips that i’ve seen of her.
At one point, i was a card carrying member of the Evangelical Church and the Republican party. It’s people like her who have made me rethink several things in my life. I know that she is not the spokesperson for either of those groups, but there are many people in those groups that believe the same things she does, way beyond even this issue. I do not want to align myself with someone like her. I don’t even want to be near the same hemisphere of thought of her.
If it were any other intelligent, respecting Christian on that show, they would have done such a better job explaining Christian doctrine, but instead, Ann Coulter drove that wedge between me and countless other people who have a hard time with the Church even deeper.
I guess i consider myself an Independent when it comes to both politics and my faith.
Do i still believe in Christian Doctrine? Most of it. At least a lot of the important issues. But i do not want to be associated with people like her, and i won’t.
I believe in freedom of speech. So, Ann, you can keep talking, but please stop driving people away from God. We all do a fine enough job of it ourselves without you adding to the difficulty of it all. Your words really aren’t changing anyone’s mind.
Radiohead : In Rainbows
In Rainbows, by Radiohead, was released today, but only digitally. as many of you know, i am a fan, so i purchased said album through inrainbows.com, like countless others before and after me.
i’ve only listened through twice thus far, and here are my initial impressions:
- out of 10 songs, there was only 1 (House of Cards) that seemed a bit vanilla to me. that is to say, i thought it wasn’t great. i actually love vanilla.
- this is the more “rock” album that many have been waiting for from these british chaps, but i sort of miss the crazy sounds and electronic stuff. i guess thom got it out of his system on his solo release.
- it’s a good album, although not my favorite. not sure where it ranks just yet. i figure there will have to be many more listens to determine.
- i am a fan of Radiohead. Pablo Honey is my least fav album by them. OK Computer is my favorite album of all time.
- Bodysnatchers was a surprise. a good one.
- you should buy it. you get to pick your own price. how could you go wrong, really? that is, unless you don’t like Radiohead. those of you out there who don’t, know who you are and i’m sad for you. but then again, i don’t care for onions, so maybe you’re sad for me. but i’m not sad. i have the new Radiohead record.
Morgan Freeman is Amazing.

THIS. IS. WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT.
im conversation of the week
sh4wn: have you seen Hot Fuzz?
Eddie: Three times. Too funny.
Eddie: I’m not sure that it ranks ahead of Shawn of the Dead as it did for you though.
sh4wn: I think Shaun of the Dead is a better story, but i think Hot Fuzz may have been a little funnier for me.
sh4wn: In general, i like zombies more than cops.
sh4wn: I mean, who doesn’t?
Eddie: Living next to me?
sh4wn: Well, just in general.
sh4wn: Zombies don’t live next to people…
Eddie: That is true.
sh4wn: That’s just crazy talk.
Eddie: You’re very right. I mean, who’s going to even let a zombie fill out an apartment application much less do an open house?
Eddie: I was way off.
sh4wn: I’m glad you saw it.
sh4wn: It’s mostly the smell.
sh4wn: The manners play a part as well.
sh4wn: And of course, there’s the whole ‘income generation’ thing.
Eddie: I was thinking the incessant need to kill, maim, and devour brains, but you’re probably closer to the reality of it all.
