A whole bunch of stuff

Posted in bands / music, gaming, movies, personal, random, superheroes, television by sh4wn on the September 27, 2007

one.  ‘Hot Fuzz’, which i watched for the first time last night, instantly jumped into my top 5 comedies of all time.  i may have even liked it more than ‘Shaun of the Dead’.  i’m still trying to decide.

two.  another year has passed.

three.  Halo 3 is a beautiful game, and i really had no intentions of buying it, but now i’m considering it.  i don’t have much time for games these days, but i must say i’m interested.  the only thing that keeps me from it is that i don’t want to also pay for online play right now, as my video game playing is limited.

four.  saw Heypenny play the other evening at the Exit/In.  VERY cool.  i highly recommend them.  bouncy, fun, energetic, great live show, quirky songs.  anxiously awaiting a full release from them.

five.   it rains today.  also, i ate granola and yogart (blueberry) for breakfast.

six.  tonight i eat cajun chicken pasta and drink wine.  quite possibly my favorite meal.

seven.  i haven’t done this in a long time, and i’m rusty.  do something exciting with your life.  don’t just sit there and do nothing.  live is too short and there are too many amazing things out there waiting for you.

eight.  finally watched the first season of Heroes.  pretty decent.  Sylar is a badass and a great villain.

music for your inner-geek

The entire soundtrack to Super Mario World performed by 1 man using dozens of instruments.  Like Sufjan Stevens meets childhood memories.  Seriously, this is great stuff.  (thanks to Aaron)

the king plays pinball with spock, who’s chillin in his crib.

first of all: star trek cribs and other in a series of commercials on G4. go watch these now. all of them. i think there’s 4.

More good: pinball song, this variation of the pinball song, and 321 Contact.

and now…

4 reasons why Burger King is the fastfood leader:

1. their fries are crunchy and delicious, and the best fries in the fasfood market.
2. the package design is better than anyone’s out there.  take a look at the cup you’re drinking out of next time you’re there and then think about the other guys.
3. their commercials are bizarre and, at least of late, have been more original than the competition (think of the king sneaking up on people, scaring them while trying to give them tasty food items vs. think outside the bun).
4. i just purchased 3 video games for the 360 for $10.99, including a game where you sneak up on people to give them food.  they have characters like the Subserviant Chicken.  and you can be the king.

a series of things, mostly unlike other things

one.  i love Gears of War.  the visuals are stunning, and the game play is intense.  one of my favorite games of all time.  i’m also enjoying Marvel Ultimate Alliance.  the heroes that you get to play are different enough that you don’t feel like you are just playing variations of the same character.

two.  that being said, my xbox 360 crashed on me in september, and it took 3 weeks for them to send me a new one.  the one they sent me was the wrong region, so it won’t play dvd’s.  this angered me, and i called 360 support, and they told me they would overnight a box for me to ship it back, and then they would overnight a new unit to me.  several days later, after the promised box still hadn’t arrived, i called back and was told that the supervisor that had promised that to me had told me misinformation and that it would again take 3 weeks to have a new unit shipped to me.  most disappointing.

three.  leslie passed the CPA exam.  she is very happy.  i am very proud of her.

four.  i have photos of our england trip, but it’s very difficult to find time to sort through 600 photos to choose the best ones to show to the world.  i will get to it, though.

five.  Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a great movie.  it’s a touch racey, but the performances and the editing, along with the script are very good.

six.  i watched Brick recently, and it was pretty well done, although a bit hard to follow at times.  one thing i will say about it is that it was very edgy and had no “bad” language in it, which goes to show that you can make a very edgy movie with heavy content and not use cuss words, without it feeling forced.

seven.  i’m reading The Worthing Saga currently, by Orsen Scott Card (thanks chris).  he’s the guy who wrote Ender’s Game.  very different and engaging, for those who like sci-fi that isn’t overly sci.

More 48 hour info

Posted in 48 hour film, gaming by sh4wn on the July 27, 2006

As i patiently wait for the Rockstar Table Tennis demo to download on my xbox360, i decided to post some more information concerning the 48 hour film project that we were so priviledged to be a part of this past weekend.

First of all, and thanks to aaron, here is a youtube link to the movie.

For those who want the full experience, you can see the movie, along with many of the others, at the Belcourt this upcoming week.  Here are the days and times.  We are in group B. Super Fun Gunslingin’ Club.

i think my download is almost complete, so i will now enjoy some digital table tennis.

Lazy Tuesday.

i'm working on some mixes for posting, and i've been playing much of the X-Men video game, trying to beat it before the movie comes out this friday. i've also been hunting for some SNL video links to put on here, but i'm having a difficult time finding reliable links. You should check out Taco Town, Natalie Portman Gangsta Rap, and Lazy Sunday. If you're part of Myspace, do a search in their video section. you should find them.

Here's an interesting X-Men article. It's more comic related, rather than movie related, but you may enjoy it anyway if you're a fan.

i'm playing an online game these days called Travian. i'm on server 5, for those who like those sort of things. It's a strategy game that you can play for like 10 min a day or so. Mindless, yet, fun.

X-Men: The Offical Game

Posted in gaming by sh4wn on the May 18, 2006

Yesterday i received a game that i preordered – X-Men: The Offical Game for the xbox 360.  I will quote a review i read, because they said it best:

And yes, the game is gorgeous on the 360. Watching Bobby Drake weave his ice slide about, while used portions tumble away in blocks, or seeing Nightcrawler teleport in a puff of black smoke from one location to another are all moments in which the game truly sparkles. And then, just for the sheer joy of it, there is the raging beast that slices and dices through enemies – Wolverine.

and here's the part that i love most about the game:

The combat styles for each character are markedly different. Wolverine is about slash, tumble, impale, slash some more and finally, slash some more. Iceman has defensive shields and that ice slide that can occupy a large part of the screen with the pathing, but is really a joy to watch and control. He can also send out a variety of ranged attacks, from a single volley to a locked-on storm. Nightcrawler, though, is perhaps the most diverse, and most entertaining of the trio. His acrobatic moves are much fun, but it is his teleportation that makes him a real joy to play. He can pop down from a high structure to a position behind an enemy, unleash an attack and then teleport away. Go back to the first movie, and his attacks inside the White House and you will understand exactly what is being described.

i was not expecting this game to be good, i must admit.  i purchased it because i love superhero games, and i love Nightcrawler, but i was very disappointed with the other X-Men games they've released in the past.  This game exceeded my expectations, and i've only played for a few hours.  Playing Nightcrawler is so much fun.  i'm a geek.

Metareview – G.R.A.W. (Xbox 360)

Posted in gaming by sh4wn on the March 9, 2006

ok…so i’m really geeking out this week, but this game looks amazing.  Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter is one of the latest releases from the xbox 360, and yes, it may very well be my next game purchase.  i may try to review it for you after i play it, but more than likely i won’t.  here’s a good review.
